Involving 7 Tunisian doctors, an artery transplant to a 9 year old child taken from his mother aged 45, was held at the military hospital in Tunis. The child who suffered from vascular atrophy of his internal organs, had kidney failure and high blood pressure which he could not bear neither could his mother.

The operation, which lasted 7 hours, was led by Dr. Mohamed Jamal Manaa and was successful. The surgery, an intervention so delicate and complex, as explained by the head of department.

The doctors stressed the fact that this is a first worldwide surgery, such an operation has never occurred in the world, they assured, since all transplants were done using synthetic arteries, and the patient was too young to receive an artificial graft, the team had to remove a piece of artery from his mother and implant it in place of the stenotic portion of his aorta. As for the mother, she was able to benefit from a synthetic vessel transplant.

Note that the mother and the child are doing well, a monthly medical follow-up will be done.
